NEW YEARS EVE…THE PRE PLAN

content to fall asleep around 10p after overindulging in red wine and no regret high calorie appetizers – this new years will be different.   a much craved visitor will be staying with us over the holidays.  my best friend.   a two year native of NYC and looking for the type of NYE celebration circa two years ago of course.  so am i.   things have changed,  in between early bedtimes and drinking strategies on an average weekend, wine:water=better morning, there are new priorities at play.

kids, suburbs, the other end of the city which might as well be the suburbs, the awful husband that is sure to accompany – friends that don’t mix.  the list has thinned.  from twelve good hearted “i love you” bff’s as the clock strikes twelve no matter where you are, that didn’t matter because you were all together has evolved to a motley crew of outsiders.

aka the friends you work out with on a weekend morning never admitting that the next six days will not follow suite.  the ones that are always up for a pint or much more, you didn’t know you needed to cry there you were.  the new parents that you invite to everything and they tell you how thankful they are to have you and to have a night out to look forward – as predicted bail at the last second like clockwork.  best friends abroad that you invite anyways so they don’t forget that you used to be fun. the work friends that you want so much to integrate but are not integrating you based on the fact that you may be one of the above.  and then the last choice, the neighbours – so fun and yet dangerous in running into at the garbage pails pouring out bottles and regret in the ally on the first day of the new year.

basically as per the invite list we are down to us, NYC bff, our dog (baby if you must know because if we didn’t have him, how would we find value just us – insert emoticon representing sarcasm against society expectation here) and bff’s sister.

i am still hoping for an impromptu dance party. but of course now the cocktail selection has become much more of an investment than bar rail of 20’s gone by it will cost a lot more to get there.  alas, we work hard.  good wine is worth it.
